FINDING A THERAPIST
DECIDING TO START THERAPY
People begin psychotherapy for a range of reasons. Some may want to understand more about therapy (and themselves), or may be seeking support with specific challenges that they are facing. Others may have noticed recurring patterns that they would like to work on (for example difficulties in relationships) or have a desire to make lasting changes in the way they live their lives.
Choosing a psychotherapist
To gain the most out of therapy you need to find a therapist who has excellent training and experience, and with whom you feel you could develop a good relationship. This will help you ensure that the therapy you receive is safe, ethical, and of a high quality.
The first step is to check that your therapist is registered with an appropriate regulatory body (such as the UK Council for Psychotherapy) as this will confirm the quality of their training and ensure that they work within ethical guidelines and have a level of accountability.
The next step is to look for a therapist with whom you can build a strong supportive relationship. It can be really helpful to have an initial session with a therapist (or perhaps several therapists) before committing to ongoing therapy with them. That way you can get a sense of how they work and whether their style will work for you.
Psychotherapy can be both a rewarding and a challenging journey and it is important that you find a therapist who can support and guide you along the way.
My Approach
I offer an initial session at a reduced rate to enable you to make an informed choice about whether you would like to start therapy with me. This is an opportunity for me to get to know a bit about what is bringing you to therapy, and for you to get a sense of my therapeutic style and whether you feel that we are a good fit for ongoing work.
